az arany középút
Nomen est omen. Choosing a name for a company defines a lot of things.
It may be even more definitive than choosing the name for a baby. The name
of a company expresses the dedication of the founders, sound and short to
the values of the company clear for customers. We have chosen a name that
expresses our preferences, major values and our philosophy.
We established the company in 2006. We aim to create highest quality software products, do system-intergation, support operation of our customers, who are small and medium business companies. We put in front quality of out product and services and the functions that mean value to our customers. According to this we decided to put the word 'Craftsmen' along with 'Software'. This describes the way we work. This made the name of the company Verhas & Verhas Software Craftsmen.
What does craftsmen mean?
The way we work is craftsmanship that means tailored, quality products that fit the customer needs to the maximal extent. We were discussing a lot how we wanted to create software, what the best way was. Having more than 20 years of experience we met a lot of different software development methodologies and styles. Even the methodologies developed a lot during this period. We had seen three major approaches:
Guild, Craftsmanship or Factory?
Working as a member of the guild (think of medieval ages) means that the product is created by a single person from the very start to the very end. He or she understands all the detailes, a real master or artist if you like that expression. If he or she is really good then the products created are magnificent. We, however, can not recommend the use of such a software to any of our customers. If someone contracts such a lone master to create a software all the heartbeat of the company will run through the fist of the single person. If that person gets ill, dies or looking at the bright side: wins the lottery he or she will not be interested any more to maintan the software anymore. Using unsupported software is a danger that no company can afford.
The other end of the line is the factory. There are people standing at the side of the conveyor prducing the same quality of products to everyone. Each of them knows the specific job he or she is doing but do not neccesarily have an overview of the whole process. Becaus of this the quality of the products may be waiving, some of the functions excellent (not allways the one that fits your special needs), others lacking or in need of compromise. However a software company will never stop abruptly, and will never leave you without support. You can rely on the fact that a company will deliver the products and services sooner or later.
Craftsmen are different. There are some people working. Each of them is master of his or her own area, but everybody knows the whole story. Each one is performing the area he is she is the best in. If one wins the lottery someone else can replace. Perhaps not at the quality level of the master for a while but in quality mathcing the needs. Because everybody knows the whole process evrybody knows what to do and also why to do. What is the main goal, what is the big picture. There won't be any function polished that is never used. On the other hand every function will match the quality needs of the customer.
Having the big big picture is not only important because iot guarantees quality and the understanding of customer needs. It also means that the workers know what they do, why they do it and it is essential to reach personal satisfaction. It gives reason to work, which is an often neglected but unavoidable base for good results.
That is the story, why we are ctaftsmen...
